Y17 Juvenile Workouts
Natural Defiance, Native Charm, Tortuga & Despedida
-----------------------------
Things had been running pretty damn quiet for Intrepid, or at least so it would seem in the public eye, but they should know better by now. Nicholas Landing was not one to sit idly by as others prepped and raced. He was doing prep work of his own and now was the time to give off those hints of success to come for the public. This was one of his most anticipated juvenile crops and it was for good reasons. Natural Defiance was a filly that had been in the works for eons it seemed and now the time for the Impressario x El Sol Del Mar filly was finally here. He watched as Estella rode the filly out from the barns, his eyes raking over the filly in a critical manner. She was a thinker, a cunning filly with a temperament as moody as any spirited horse, but man was she a sight to behold. She was one of the last El Sol Del Mar foals and Nick had to say, he felt truly blessed to have gotten his hands on her, but only time would tell if it would pay off. Pedigree wasn't everything. She needed to prove herself. Behind her was Native Charm. Adele was smiling atop this one and he could clearly see the open connection between this TT hopeful and rider. They had good chemistry. His eyes dropped back to Tortuga. Anachi had thrown an impressive foal in the form of Lawless, but this boy, the son of Paradise Island...was something all his own. He commanded presence in a calming, superior way. He wasn't the type to bounce about and toss his head around, but more so a silent fox. Intelligence reflected deeply in his eyes as he minded Jeff Saunders' control. The colt hadn't bonded with many, a one human kind of horse, he preferred the less is more approach in all things it seemed. Despedida was something fresh and new. His parents had mild racing careers, but both were trying to make a name for themselves in the breeding shed and it had resulted in a rather precocious colt. Now Des was something new and different for IRS. He was driven by heart and not competitiveness or an overly spirited temperament. He was driven by the need to please and Angelina had won his heart over, just like Adele had won Quick Silver's. Nick watched as the four juveniles warmed up respectively on the track. They partnered up respectively and breezed through the workout. He had a good feeling about each horse. Each one unique in their own way but so full of promise and this was only the beginning of IRS' silent parade of talent. The racing world wouldn't know what hit them.
Attack Apache, Divination, Fire Assault, Takeover Bid & Tempered Tempest
There was some new blood coming into the ranks this season for IRS and Nick was eager to see just how each of these unique juveniles would perform. He had no illusions of instant grandeur or success. In fact, he knew that it was most likely going to be a trying season for them, but he wasn't about to let that discourage him or his team. Eyes were trained on the only other half-sibling of Frozen Motion on the dam's side. Nick was eager to see if the Hira-Kiri mare could produce another lethal turf miler, but only time would tell. IRS has having a later start in the season, personnel changes and issues meant that Nick's time was taken away from the training and he was not about to half-ass things with this crop. They deserved the best and he was now able to make sure that they got just that. Divination danced over the turf, the Warlock daughter very much looking the picture of the racehorse she was bred to be. His eyes trailed back as Fire Assault moved. The young turf sprinting colt only too eager to be out and about. Two more horses followed and Nick just had to smile. The son of The Innocent Skier and the newest addition of the Thanks For the Memories daughter fed off each other as they completed the five horse turf workout. The turf would be a strength for IRS this year it seemed or at least he hoped so. The horses and their riders made their warm up laps, the excitement palpable in the air. The sleeping giant that was IRS was awakening and there was only hope in the air.
He watched as the horses moved per his instruction into a three-furlong breeze, each horse rallying and fighting for their spot in the line as they cruised for home. He felt himself smile in anticipation. Things were just beginning for the IRS juvenile string and as each horse swept by in tandem he couldn't help but be pleased. No one was looking to be overlooked or underperform - it was time to shine.
Hidden Scheme, Beneficence & Whistle Blower
Bennie was a new breed for IRS, truly tapping into those less known lines in an attempt to bring some diversity to the gene pool here at IRS. Only time would tell if the Bia Lupercus daughter would shine on the tracks or be a passing fancy, but Nick was eager to test the waters with her. She was animated with her movement, looking and eyeing her competition and today that took on the form and shape of Mastermind and Whistle Blower. The two colts were just as boisterous and vocal as they moved over the dirt terrain. The Mastermind and Jupiter sons were not caving into either and with Bennie in the middle, it was a loud trio, but once put to work, they settled in as they warmed up. They worked into the stretch work, legs extending and contracting as they soared over the terrain, each egging the other on. Scheme had more of the stamina than the sprinter colt and willful filly, but the other two pressed the colt on as they breezed on home.
These were glimpses, snapshots of their abilities, their dreams and potential, but Nick knew there was more to come. Bigger and better things for each horse and their unique talents and abilities.
