Dirt Races
Janvier Prospect - 9F - P
Judge: ISABELLE
FIRST Silent Game
SECOND Bonsaia
THIRD Running Through Fire
FOURTH Take Me Higher
FIFTH Straton
Janvier Maiden - 10F - M
Judge: RIPLEY
Win. Chocolatier
Place. Red Hot Secret
Show. Mambo Mama
Fourth. Surrealism
Fifth. Sillencio (can be DQed, no workout)
This was a paceless race with Chocolatier stalking Sillencio who lacked the bottom to last the 10 furlong distance. At the eighth pole, Chocolatier inherited the lead and was pressed by Surrealism. Red Hot Secret and Mambo Mama closed simultaneously down the stretch, but Chocolatier was rested and he stole away to a length victory.
Chocolatier: Easily the most precocious in terms of speed and was prepared for this larger field after the workout.
Red Hot Secret: He will be a colt to watch next out as he had everything against him in terms of pace and still closed within a length of the winner.
Mambo Mama: I like her spirit and determination. Like Red Hot Secret, she was running into a paceless race and while ten furlongs is within her distance range, I feel like shorter distances will play into her favor more to emphasize her closing punch.
Surrealism: He has an interesting pedigree being by Smokin Pistol (who I believe is a sprinter). I couldn't get too much of a feel for his style in the workout and I saw him running evenly throughout. Maybe add a 2f extension to make him 6-11F and see how he does at the shorter distances.
Sillencio: I would have placed him higher with a workout. Like I said, I don't mind if you take a DQ on this one.

Utanali Derby - 9F - G5
Judge: Ripley
Win. Rough Boy
Place. Nutcracker Suite
Show. Shuttershock
Fourth. Maleficent
I just preferred Rough Boy in this race. His running tactics helped him and being that Nutcracker Suite typically runs better at a distance, I thought Rough Boy would easily have this win. He was a classy two year old and although she had better experience, Rough Boy had better quality starts in terms of in the money finishes.
Nutcracker Suite's experience and competitiveness is what placed her second in this field. She ran a lot more, but hadn't won a race since the early fall, just like Rough Boy.
m I believe she'll step it up after this race though, as all horses do who come off a layoff.
