More Reasons Why
Ventura is a mare that turned out differently from how everybody expected her to be. Bred with the initial intention of being a fantastic Triple Tiara filly excelling particularly at eight furlongs and up, Ventura matured into a ferociously fast sprinter. But before that even happened, we should delve into her history. At two, Ventura demonstrated the precociousness she had inherited from both sire and dam. She broke her maiden on her first try in the Legacy Turf Stakes and finished second the following week in the Unicorn Horn Juvenile Dirt - both races that aimed her early towards a classic career. The mare scored her second major victory - and broke into grade four - in the Magic Millions Fillies Turf and continued to run against all genders on all surfaces, hovering around a mile, throughout the season. She finished with a second place in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies and cemented herself as an early horse to watch for the Triple Tiara.
Ventura did not disappoint, placing second to War Cry in the Unicorn Horn Dirt to kick things off and flitting between Triple Crown and Triple Tiara prospects. She scored big wins in the Alabama Stakes and Kentucky Oaks and entered the Triple Tiara strong. Ventura's performance in the Triple Tiara was very impressive, winning the first leg in the Acorn Stakes and placing second in the other two. At this point in time, her tendencies to favor seven and eight furlong races became marked. She took the final leg of the Triple Sprinter Tiara in the Starshine Sprint at seven furlongs and scored wins in the eight furlong Wire Red Mile and Caracortado Stakes leading into the Breeders Cup. Entered into the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, Ventura won by open lengths, easily overtaking her competition in a heartstopping show of speed and power. It was then that she was revealed as the sprinter that she was.
Ventura spent her four year old season dodging the heartstopping rivalry that was Forbidden To Fly versus Mastermind - not an easy feat. She took the Cigar Mile and First Lady Cup, briefly dropped to undercard racing and then rose again to take the Burst Stakes. Ven repeated in the Caracortado Stakes and proceeded to the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint for the second time, winning again. She had won ten races that season while playing around in races her stablemate was not. With the retirement of the Big Two, Ventura ended her five year old season with war to rage in the dirt sprinting world. By the time her five year old season was complete, she had left the world reeling with ten victories, all in Horse of the Year races, and at distances ranging from six to nine furlongs. Ventura won the Unicorn Horn Dirt Sprint before moving to the Wire. She took a series of sprint races and even stretched out to nine furlongs for the Autumn Dawn Treader Cup where she defeated Kentucky Derby winner Mourning Passion. Her wins in the Hudson Handicap and King's Bishop only continued to build her resume. Ventura won the Sun Festival before going into the Breeders Cup Sprint. She won her third Breeders Cup race, but didn't stop there. Ventura had one final test before her in the Dubai World Mile. She faced Spotlight Pride, hailed as one of the best turf milers in recent years, and took a courageous second place finish over a distance that she had excelled at, but had never truly been her home as much as six and seven furlongs.
By the end of her career, Ventura had taken thirty-nine races, equaling the win record initially set by stablemate Forbidden To Fly. She retired in glory. Her accomplishments merit her place in the Hall of Fame.
