You will never find a more lively filly than Nightshade. There is simply just a zest that she possesses that really makes her stand apart in the crowd. If you hear a squeal and see a prancing pony, well it's most likely to be Atropa in the post-parade, but don't be fooled by her lively persona. She isn't just a 'fun' horse to be around. As soon as you bring another horse into her sphere of vision and influence, you can be guaranteed that she is already working that horse to see how she can come out on top. This is not a filly of half-measures. When she's on the track, she is completely herself, but with an added edge and that edge is razor sharp in separating the men from the boys and the women from the girls. She doesn't mess around and will take advantage of any horse's mistakes with an undaunted ruthlessness.[BREAK][BREAK]

Needless to say, she isn't easily intimidated and prefers running in the back to better see where the holes and weaknesses are in the field. The thing about Atropa is her acceleration skills. We have yet to have seen (maybe Allure) a horse who can match her ability to accelerate at an astonishing rate. This makes this filly a lethal force in the final moments of a race. Her determination makes her a force to be reckoned with in the final stretch. Though a domineering filly, she likes to calculate from behind, and tactically makes her move to school the other competitors in the finish. She has amazing acceleration skills and when it is time to perform there is little that will hinder her from performing her best, especially when Michael is in the saddle.[BREAK][BREAK]

Nightshade has been near and dear to my heart since my return to horse racing SIM back in Y12. She has been the lifeblood for my stable and even in her classic season, when I had a half year hiatus, she was still a major player placing in two legs of the Triple Crown campaign. She's raced against the greats like HOF Eternal Phantom, Ventura, Bella Luna, Passion Heart, Born to Impress, HOF Mastermind, Ode to Glory, Red Herring, War Cry, Italian Ice, Paradise Island....and won. She's spanned the history of GHF & TW since Y12 until her final year in Y15 and she has left a mark. She's risen and fallen and climbed back up to the top again, proving that if you really want something, you can work to achieve it. [break][break]

After this year's stunning performance, claiming Horse of The Year and 6 other End of the Year Awards by popular vote, I think that it might be safe to say she has become a recognized icon to everyone here. She's been a filly that has shown, heart, power and versatility. Winning on Sand, Turf and Dirt, Nightshade has taken on some of the best on their own terms and then some on her home turf - the dirt.

She's been consistently awe-inspiring and we at Intrepid are extremely sad to see her retire. There will never be another Nightshade for us and she has shifted and redefined the way we view success. Sometimes it can be instant in a horse's juvenile season. Sometimes there can be bumps and quiet, silent years, but persistence and heart always pay off in the end and Nightshade has shown us that.
