Forbidden To Fly is an incredibly unique horse. As a juvenile, this colt flirted with flexibility. He regularly went out - and defeated - the horses of his generation that were destined for the Triple Crown. In his very first win ever, Forbidden To Fly defeated such horses as Paradise Island (who would go on to win the Triple Tiara) and Euphoria's Warrior. Fly was bred a sprinter, at six to nine furlongs, but he ascended that. He won again at the peak of his distance range in the Just A Trot Futurity, a leg of the Youth Challenge. To cap off his season, Fly stole the ultimate race - the Breeders Cup Juvenile. And in doing so, he defeated the highly touted Instant Success as well as future Hall Of Fame inductee and Kentucky Derby winner Eternal Phantom. Winning the juvenile usually makes you the early favorite for the Triple Crown. Too bad Fly didn't actually run at any of the distances in the fabled series.
Three year old sprinters back in Fly's day didn't have a Triple Sprinter Crown or Red Mile series to aim at. Thus, Fly spent his season running in the undercards at The Wire, winning consistently and carving himself a place in the ranks. As a four year old, Fly began to wage true war. He took several HoTY races and only finished out of the top two twice. It was as a five year old that Fly took no prisoners. He duked it out with Hall Of Fame inductee Mastermind. It quickly became known that Fly was the master of six and seven furlongs, with Mastermind typically having the edge for eight furlongs and up. Fly concluded his season with only five losses (all of them second place finishes). But to conclude his career, Fly took on the best sprinters over both surfaces in the Dubai World Sprint and came out with an electrifying victory.
This truly fast yet dangerously flexible horse deserves a place in the Hall Of Fame for all of these accomplishments.
