With the year finally coming to a close, KC Racing has a few announcements to make before the arrival of the most competitive series of the year, the Breeders’ Cup. After spending a few days discussing with head trainer, John Murchison, Kim Kenny has decided to retire a few horses from her older stock with hopes of giving them the rest of the month off before transporting them to Kennington Farm. As with many of their horses, Kennington Farm has always acquired a breeding share in KC Racing’s racing stock and these horses will be no different.
ESCAPE ARTIST
An Original
Y13, bay
Won on turf and dirt with a heavy preference for turf at a distance of 5-9 furlongs
Escape Artist was KC Racing’s very first sprinter and was taken off the bench from Ripley’s stock to put back on the track. After he got back into racing form, the then-colt went on to cause an upset against older, more experienced horses in the End of Year Juvenile Sprint against more experienced, Breeders’ Cup hopefuls. The now stallion has won on both the turf and dirt at 5-9 furlongs. With a superb disposition, with a mischievous side, Escape Artist will be a welcome addition to Kennington Farm come February Y18. Continue reading for some of his accomplishments over his career:
Lifetime Earnings: $1,200,000
Won at 2
End of Year Juvenile Turf Sprint against more experienced, HOTY horses
Won at 3
Winter Cup Turf G4 Sprint*
Autumn Cup Dirt G4 Sprint*
Won at 4
La Coneja Derby*
Fallamee Derby*
Summer Cup G2 Turf*
Spring Cup G3 Turf*
Also placed in the Maker’s Mark Mile*, Royal Red Richard Memorial Stakes*.
The stallion started slowing down this year and slowly started to seem disinterested in racing towards the end of his four year old season. However, this horse has done a phenomenal job of keeping up with champion sprinters over the last couple of months and won at the G1 level. He comes from fresh, original lines and will definitely add diversity to any future sprinter foal’s lines.
Escape Artist is retiring sound and will be available at stud in February Y18. His stud fee will be $9,000 (live foal stands & nurses). He’s going to have a limited number of bookings for his first year at stud so book while you can by PMing me with the mares you’re wanting to breed with him.
A TRUE HERO
Everyday Hero - The True Nut, by True Italian
Y13, chestnut
Won over turf and dirt with equal preference at 9-12 furlongs
G1 status, accumulated $1,000,000 in earnings
We absolutely hate to retire this gorgeous, red boy but much like Escape Artist, his heart just isn’t in the game anymore. Of course, we know he’s always had his heart out for the ladies so a life of luxury and mares at Kennington Farm is the perfect way for Hero to spend the rest of his days. Although primarily ran in undercards, Hero showed finesse over both turf and dirt surfaces. No matter the surface, he adjusted without fuss and dug deep into the turf or the dirt and shoved on.
He was known for being competitive and had a powerful closing kick for flashy, edge-of-your-seat close finishes. He has phenomenal bloodlines and had very large hooves to follow in through both his sire and dam. With his excellent disposition, tenacity and ability to win on both surfaces with relative ease (he managed to the dirt very well after running on the turf solely for a couple of races), he’s bound to pass it down to his offspring.
Unfortunately, what we thought was him just getting tired of racing turns out that he was experiencing some swelling in one of his legs over the last month. Other than that, the stallion is retiring completely sound and will be ready to stand stud alongside Escape Artist in February. A True Hero’s stud fee will be for Y18 will be $6,000 (live foal stands & nurses). PM with any mares you want to consider breeding to him for Y18.
On another note, KC Racing has decided to race Indian Night for his 5 year old season in Y18 instead of retiring him at the end of the year.
