Cosmic Queen jockeyed by Maggiletti Reynolds
Never Surrender jockeyed by Kendall Williams
Ripley shrugged her coat back on as a breeze chilled her and raised goosebumps on her flesh. Her green eyes flashed down the length of the turf, picturing a field of horses charging over the grass. Soon. Year Seventeen had ended. Excitement was brewing for the new year. Her juvenile crop was laden with talent, practically bursting at the seams. She wondered how the year would play out. Which of her young horses would rise to the top? Which ones would show that they needed more time to develop? The anticipation was torture, but she would enjoy the journey and the job just as she always did. The head trainer of Battle Brook clasped her hands over the rail and looked down to the gap. They still had a few days to find out if she would be bringing any other horses home, but for the moment, this was the final juvenile workout.
Cosmic Queen and Never Surrender were picture perfect as they broke into easy going jogs up the homestretch. Both of them were dainty types at 15.3 hands. It was surprising that Cosmic Queen would be the more bulky of the two, considering the size and girth of Never Surrender's dam, Paranormal Hunter. CQ2 as she was referred to around the barn was muscled out nicely and she appeared the larger of the fillies. The Touch Up granddaughter trotted with her ears pricked, her head turning every so often to glance about and take in her surroundings. The filly was a kind one, unusual from that particular female family line, and she moved with all of the confidence in the world.
Never Surrender had all of her mother's shadow draped over like a cape. She didn't have her mother's attitude or stubbornness, her size or her power. Eve was her own horse, a combination of her sire and the prolific miler mare. She was deerlike and silent in her movements and carried herself with innate grace. Kendall was perched above her withers, a little bird herself, and her presence was a calming one. Ripley had chosen Kendall specifically for the plain brown dappled daughter of Calamity Queen. While Never Surrender wasn't a difficult horse to train by any measure, she could get a little hyper.
The duo moved over the track, gaining steam with every second away from the barn. Cosmic Queen started eyeing the bay filly, her body angling toward the foe as she took her measure. Competitiveness was not something that CQ2 lacked. She could get as on the muscle as any colt and she was right in that moment. Maggie chided the filly and angled her head back into the rail, determined to not let the gray-roan get too on the bit. Put in her place, CQ2 focused back on her job, producing a fluid canter that reminded Ripley a lot of Cosmic Warfare, her sire.
The duo finished their warm up and slowed to a jog to make their way onto the inner turf course for their five furlong workout. Both fillies were excited now, their nostrils flaring in and out, their bodies taunt with excitement as they took notice of the changing terrain. Most of the time, they galloped at home on a synthetic track. Grass meant that they were actually going to run. Eve tossed her delicate head, yanking at Kendall's hands. The rider relented once the filly had given her back control and let the bay loose. Together, Cosmic Queen and Never Surrender flitted into the first furlong of their workout.
Eve may not have been Paranormal Hunter, but she had another thing going for: high cruising speed. She made Cosmic Queen keep up with her and all she had to do was extend those perfect brown legs and settle into stride. Her efficiency was a thing of beauty and she made Kendall's life as a jockey a dream. The filly galloped steadily over the grass, her ears pricked as she played leader over CQ2 who was forced to chase. Not that she seemed to mind much, Maggie let the filly relax on a loose rein. Cosmic Queen settled at the other filly's hip, ears flicking back and forth, awaiting command from her rider.
The fillies picked up speed with every passing furlong, their expressions becoming more determined and fiery as they realized this was all out war. Maggie and Kendall simply stayed quiet, recognizing the speed with their internal time clocks. The fillies were professional to say the least. Ripley was smiling as they straightened in the stretch, suddenly head to head when Cosmic Queen was given her cue to range up alongside Never Surrender. The bay filly didn't make it easy though. She responded with a flourish and gave Cosmic Queen her answer. The pair soared through the wire and Ripley stopped her watch at 1:01 2/5 around the dogs. Definitely a good time when the turf was playing slower and neither filly liked to be on the pace. Give them each a target and they probably would have run a whole lot faster.
