8 Furlongs on Dirt Juvenile Workout
Delightful Pyne (Pyne) - Londyn Graham
Flitcraft (Flit) - Abigail Fortunata
Sonny's Gem (Gemmie) - Chloe Donahue
This year Isabelle was determined to get her sprinters working at longer distances, and succeeding at the mile range. The last year’s racing had shown large gaps in the central furlongs, so she’d stepped things up in training to be sure her juveniles did not get caught at favoring very short or very long distances. Everyone would have their preferences, but Isabelle wanted to ensure all of her horses could race at their distances and have a comfort level there. She was very hopeful that Delightful Pyne would pull off some great stuff, despite his being created he seemed to be well liked, and was showing some great speed.
The bay colt was kind hearted, and loved the run more then the competition. He’d favor the middling range of the pack, an nice spot for his personality. He could shuffle around, and then make his move as the closers came up to his heels. Isabelle loved the way he moved, low and flat out, Pyne possessed a great striding gallop. Londyn was getting her first juvenile from the prospect crop, and the intern was looking to slowly become a full fledged jockey in a year or two. Pyne was fantastic for her, always attentive, and she was growing well into a professional. Not having a problem with the gate, the pair waited for the next two to load up.
Flitcraft was fancy, but only on the outside. Abigail was working on his manners, but his bratty nature kept her attention at all times. This colt would strike off at his own accord if not kept in firm control, and today was no exception. Flit was highly anticipated for NDM, the first racing foal from Cute Tee, dam of Cute Italian and granddam to legendary Italian Ice. He’d had some mixed reviews so far, but his first day on the track hadn’t come yet. Pawing and snorting, with a few attendant Abigail got the flashy chestnut into position.
Gemmie had fast been a barn favorite since arriving as a weanling. With unknown lines, she’d taken to bossing everyone else around to her own amusement. Particular, snobby, and very correct this girl had a very hard head. Sporting a tiny body didn’t seem to phase her a bit, she’d put up her hooves against anybody who challenged her. Chloe loved her fighting spirit-and the long grooming sessions. Sonny’s Gem was a little rough on the inside, but sparkled on the outside. She didn’t care to be manhandled, so she daintily lifted her own little hooves into the starting gate, taking care not to touch anything dirty.
Flying open the gates, the trio galloped out well. With good breaks and straight lines, the trainers were happy. Everyone stayed together for a few strides, with no one challenging for front Gemmie took the lead. Pushing up and crossing towards the rail, Flit and Pyne eased back a little, galloping together a little behind the filly. Today’s work was a good mile long, and was going to be a hard one, not a practice breeze. Jockeys checked strides as trainers checked timers, watching as the three primed themselves along.
Gemmie’s ears were flicking around, she might be small but she possessed a mighty heart. Pyne was happy on the inside, a fun expression on his face if there could be, bright and alert. Waking up with the exercise he was pushing the pace the little as the half point passed. Flit was grumpy as ever, with a bit of a sour expression, as his attempts to compete with Pyne kicked in. Jockies squeezed up, pushing Gemmie to hasten her pace as the three fought down the track. Flit pulled ahead of Pyne, boxing him a bit. Londyn pulled a bold move but easing his back so she could get around the chestnut’s behind and go wide. It might have cost her a bit but when it came to the wire, Pyne was within striking distance.
