It had been a while since we caught up with Holly Montgomery. She's been hard at work getting her horses ready for the fall season as we now are entering into September. Are rumors we heard true? We wanted to catch up with the familiar face as she took some time out from training to sit down and talk to us.
Well, Holly, it's been a while. How have things been for Montgomery Acres?
Holly: Things are going quite well actually. All the horses are performing quite well. I have no worries about any of them as we are heading into the colder months. Everyone is at the top of their game. Yes, some competition has been really competitive, but it's been a thrill to watch the way they handle themselves.
Now, we have heard rumors of you retiring Ground Zero and Southern Peach at the end of this season. Is that true?
Holly (giggles): As I plan, Tiny Dancer will be the one to retire once she hits Grade One, which she is just one win away. She has had an incredible racing career. I know her final start is just around the corner and she will join my broodmare band next year. As for Ground Zero and Southern Peach, they aren't coming into my breeding program till Y19. Them, along with Hot Looks, will be officially retired by August of next season. I want to run them through the summer and retire them sound so they're fresh and ready for Y19.
How do you feel about your two year olds? Any of them really standing out?
Holly (big smile comes onto face): My babies have been incredibly strong. Then, there are a few who haven't quite come around just yet and that's okay. Samaritan Hero has been at the peak of his performance and persistancy. He is just one win from Grade Three. He is the powerhouse of the bunch. One win from Grade Four are Lasheeva; who's been a very strong filly on both surfaces, Minuet Trinity; whom I've tried a few times at HOTY but pulling her out of those till most likely next season, and Piece Of Me; who the strongest filly in my juvenile string.
Your three year old string is small. Has this been a disadvantage for them?
Holly: Not at all. I feel that they could be better, but they are still coming into themselves. Every single one has their own stengths. They just haven't had the best of luck this season. I feel their maturity levels will be at their peaks next season. Will see a better outcome for them. Who knows? They could turn around and throw out some surprises by the end of this season.
How are your yearlings doing? Any standouts for your Y18 juvenile string?
Holly: I felt my Y17 juveniles were strong and demanding. I believe my Y18 string will blow them all away. Each one has been growing rapidly, in strength and spirit. Adalia seems to be the strongest filly, along with Jersey Glory, whom we bought from KC Racing, and Lady Pegasus. They will be the strengths to my fillies. The three strongest colts are Kosmodor, Dash of Malibu, and Boomerang. All of my Malibu King babies are phenomenal. I sold one of his fillies to Valkyrie Stud, to make a name for herself there. I feel they will really get his name out there once they start running. It will really be a sight to see.
Well, Holly it's been so nice catching up with you. We will see you again soon, okay?
Holly: Sounds good. I'm always here to enjoy a nice chat. See you next year!
