Landslide & Talia Smith
The lanky bay Thoroughbred stepped onto the frost-covered track in the early September morning. A guttural scream could be heard from miles away as Landslide pranced his way onto the track. He was Firestone’s newest resale project and Carter saw lots of potential in the two-year-old. His unusual face markings stood out against his brown coat as Talia gave him a pat on the neck, waiting for instructions on how to work the newcomer. Warren pranced underneath the jockey, anxious to start moving around the track. Carter stood by the rail of the track, bundled up for warmth against the early morning temperature.Warren was a good-looking horse. A little awkward but he was built a sprinter and it looked like he hadn’t grown into his legs just yet. Carter gave Talia the signal to start his warm up, then they were going to breeze him three furlongs to see what he had in him. Warren seemed to have a lot of energy this morning and a run was just what would help him.The colt, knowing what was going to happen, leapt forward and bounced into a powerful canter before Talia could even ask him to trot. She grabbed onto a loose piece of mane and straightened herself out, easily feeling his long stride reach out underneath her. For a two-year-old, Warren remained focused on his job ahead as he cantered counter-clockwise around the Firestone training track. Several long, firm strides in and Talia found the colt's rhythm meaning that they could turn really start their workout. Pressed the colt onwards, Warren responded quickly as his stride started to lengthen. Talia was taken aback at his acceleration - it was strong and powerful as they moved up the short distance down the track.Warren moved forwards with strong strides and was starting to get aggressive down the stretch. Talia felt like she was riding a powerhouse, and she was not wrong. For a baby, he knew how to handle the track. Carter smiled from the side of the track as he watched the colt dig into the track and power home. As soon as Talia passed her finish mark, she stood in her stirrups to try and slow the sprinter down. Warren shook his head violently, throwing in a few crow hops that caught Talia off guard, but she couldn’t help but laugh at the colt’s antics. Carter could have found a hidden gem in this horse.
