Battle Brook Stable Update
Four Year Olds
Swing Dancer: The pretty daughter of Popcorn Blitz and Foxtrot finally reached her grade one level last out in the Cairo Stakes. Situated at 6 furlongs, the speedy mare clocked out her rivals and came out of the race well. While some of the staff felt as though Danny could run on and be productive, everyone preferred to retire the mare on a high note to help build the broodmare roster. Swing Dancer joins Awestruck in early Year Seventeen retirement. She will have a year off to recover from her racing career before she will be bred in Y19 to Sun King. Happy trails!
Aphrodite's Chant: After finishing second a couple times to Firestone Racing's Seems Legit, the light gray mare has finally found her winning stride. She took the 8F Libra Stakes at GHF, July Wk 3 and looks to continue that success in August. The ultimate goal is to get her back in HOTY competition and expectations are that the daughter of Positively Precious will run again at age 5.
Artemis' Glory: Although Artemis' Glory has been lightly raced for the majority of the season, that is about to change. Sprinter and miler races are becoming abundant in the fall and the daughter of Positively Precious and Finale Slew is going to start coming out to play. She took the Orchid Stakes last out and will continue on a stout schedule through the end of the year.
Fire It Up: One of three geldings on the BBS roster, Fire It Up is making his consistent top level efforts, recently running in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic. While it wasn't the result the staff had hoped for, no one expects the Native Flame x Winning Touch son to back down. He will go next in the Anodyne Memorial Stakes in hopes of breaking into grade one territory in a HOTY race.
Notorious: Like Artemis' Glory, the bay son of Like A Cheetah has been keeping a relatively low profile this year, if by low you mean winning 5 HOTY races. The waters will get steeper but he knows all about deep waters. His schedule only gets more intense as the year progresses, but he's been prepared all year long for a heavy late season. One only has to look at his three year old Turf Triple Crown run to remember how Notorious fairs under pressure.
Summer Romance: Not much has been said about the DW Flamekissed mare. While not as sparkly as the other turf mare sensation Cyclonaria, Summer Romance has been drilling her competition in the turf sprints in Y17. With 6 HOTY victories to date, Summer Romance has already achieved beyond former BBS runner Feline Frenzy. While her schedule is start to start, Summer Romance will ultimately end up against the males in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
Uno Momento: The rangy bay stallion has been relatively low-key this year with only two wins to date. He has a schedule written out that has him finishing the season in the Breeders' Cup Classic, but word has it that his retirement is not going to come at the end of Year Seventeen. The handsome horse will either race for BBS or Valkyrie Stud in Year 18 as both parties believe he is likely to blossom at the age of 5.
Three Year Olds
Breaking Point: Second to Amaris in the first leg of the Green Mile Series, Breaking Point was given a bit of a breather between starts. Having run every month this season, the colt has demonstrated the durability of the old lines. He will continue in the Green Mile Series and is expected to make a Breeders' Cup Mile start in December.
Cascabel: Rejected at 8 furlongs in the Penn National Derby, Cascabel's connections will re-route the horse to a different distance in an effort to get him back to his winning ways. The Queen's Plate winner has not tried anything beyond 10 furlongs this season, but he has two wins at the classic distance. The expectation is that after his next start, he might stretch out.
Game Over: The little filly that could chugged to victory in the Star Festival and a second in the So Sassy Sprint (the 1st Turf Sprinter Tiara leg) and will continue her run in the series. She has been a feisty little thing and will plug away toward a start in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Sprint.
Gold Rush: Rested after a tough Triple Crown run, Gold Rush made a successful return to the races in the Smiley Stakes over older horses. He hit grade two in the process and will run next in the Autumn Cup. No word yet on where he will be pointed. Battle Brook may just run him in Year Seventeen to set up for a four year old campaign.
Key West: BBS's second gelding has potentially become its best to date. The son of Key to Flight and Strike The Win took the Easy Goer Red Mile last out, notching his grade two victory in the process. He will finish out the series and has added a big career date in December Week 4: the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.
Kismet: Another ultra-versatile filly, Kismet has demonstrated success from 5 to 10 furlongs in Year Seventeen. She will go in the Wonder Where Stakes (the final Canadian Triple Tiara leg) at ten furlongs before getting a well-deserved break. She could potentially join Game Over in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Sprint.
Luna de Soltera: The gray half-sister to El Sol del Mar, livened up the joint when she forced Black Thriller all the way to the wire in the Belmont Stakes. Unsuccessful in blocking his Triple Crown win, Luna has continued her march in the classic and marathon races. She will go in the Breeders' Stakes next again males before winding her way to her major goal this year: the Dirt Distance Series. Forced to face other horses at their best distance, Luna has shown herself well. Now it's their turn to take her on at her own game.
Miss Magic: The gray daughter of Mr. Hat and Clogs and Enchantress found her way to the winner's circle in the first leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara and then again in the Floridian Derby. Her main goal is to work her way up to the grade one level in a combination of undercard and HOTY races. She is expected to be a big hope for BBS in the distaff division at four.
Pele's Wrath: While her sire was thought to a be good miler, he has nothing on his blazing fast daughter. The near black filly has taken the combination of speed and stamina to reckless heights, drilling her way to victories in 4 HOTY races this year. Forced to sit out the first Sprinter Tiara leg at 5f, Pele's Wrath will face males in the Handsome Mile while she awaits her favorite distances of 6 and 7 furlongs in the Sprinter Tiara.
Shatter: The chestnut daughter of Worldbreaker and Screaming Mimi has not won since March, but her connections still have all the faith in the world in her. She will run consistently until she hits grade one in a mix of undercard and HOTY races. She is expected to run at the age of four in hopes of joining the likes of her own dam, Dazzling Dame and Bella Luna as the top BBS turf distaffers.
Valaska: The lesser known of three stellar turf daughters sired by Frozen Motion, Valaska has been quietly knocking off the competition at distances of 7-8 furlongs. With 5 wins so far, the filly does not show any signs of slowing up. Perhaps at this point next year, Val will join her half-sisters Amaris and Kismet as one of the top turf mares in the country.
Wire Tap: Wire Tap was the ultimate warrior in the spring and summer, winning the Preakness Champion Stakes and finishing third in the other legs of the Turf Triple Crown. He ran second in his first return off the vacation, but he is only expected to get stronger with every race. He will run in the Breeders' Cup Turf Marathon at the end of the season, but truly, his best may not come until the age of 4.
Two Year Olds
Tap Out: After two fourth place finishes in a row, Ripley decided to have the son of GS Royal Crown and Whipped Cream gelded in hopes of focusing him better. Unlike Notorious who was known for his demonstrations to the ladies, Tap Out's attention was always focused elsewhere and he started to become too difficult to handle even in the mornings. His surgery went well and he will be back in training sooner than expected if he keeps healing as well.
