Yearling Meet & Greet
There's been plenty of talk about 2 year olds making their debut, 3 year olds winning derby races and older horses making their final push for glory. They make it easy to forget that even with their success - they had to start as a curious, troublesome yearling at some point. Today KC Racing trainer, John Muchison and assistant trainer, Mikhael will finally get to meet the yearlings for KC Racing. Let's get started!

The sound of clattering hooves and a loud, shrill whinny had people craning their heads to see what the commotion was in the large horse trailer that was backing up into the lot in front of the training barn. "How many yearlings did you say we were getting?" Mik had asked Kim Kenny who was shielding the sunlight from her eyes with her hand. "Seven, two fillies and five colts." The stable always seemed to have an overabundance of colts and with Oh The Irony out for the season it solidified the fact.
As the gate was opened and the ramp was lowered the very first horse had people oooing and ahhing. A horse with a shining gold and white coat - a palomino sabino - stood out like a sore thumb. He was sleek, tall and extremely loud. The colt parted his lips and nickered loudly at the crowd as one of the hands hurried forward to lead him off of the trailer. John looked at Kim incredulously before approaching the colt. The painted horse pranced off to one side and tossed his head, nostrils flaring, but his ears remained pricked and attentive. As if that wasn't enough a short, fat donkey jumped off the trailer and hurried to the colt's side, braying and honking. "What the hell is that?" John cursed as he eyeballed the little monster. "It's his little stable buddy, keeps him calm. Wherever Fig goes, Tamale goes." The voice came from the man getting out of the driver's side - Elijah Oak - owner of KC Stud and stallion manager.
John looked on in disbelief. "Someone put a lead on that thing." He shouted orders to one of the hands who quickly obliged. Turning back to the colt he seemed to wait from an introduction from Kim. "Figurati, one of the first foals by In Front and out of -" John finished with "Cute Italian, there's only one horse that stands out like this over at the stud. He's going to be a big boy. Definitely could be a derby contender like his dam." John commented as he patted the colt's shoulder "And he's got plenty of energy, probably going to pair him with Jean-Claude." With another look over from the trainer the colt was off to his new stall in the training barn with Tamale not far behind - having ripped the lead away from his handler.
Optimus Prime

The next horse of the trailer was a lanky looking bay with a short tail and a concave face. Mikhael was the one to step forward then, "Christ, he's a bit ugly isn't he?" Kim casually kicked the man in the shins. "He'll grow out of it. This is Optimus Prime - a clever name, it literally means 'Best Quality'" The way the woman beamed about the name prompted Mikhael to shake his head. "Obviously you thought of the name." After another kick in the shins, the trainers looked over the colt who was insistent on throwing his muzzle in their faces. "And his sire and dam?" John asked as he ran his hand down the colt's legs.
"You can't tell? He's almost the spitting image of his father in both color and conformation. He's the only son of Optimus Unstoppable to date. He's out of Point Away. His sire ran the sprinter distances, but his dam excelled on both the sprinter, miler and router distances." John seemed to rub his chin in thought, "I'll mark him down to work at the shorter distances, the competition isn't as nasty there and we need more sprinters in our stable."
When the hand tried to lead the colt away, Prime seemingly planted his hooves and refused to budge. He kept looking back towards the trailer as a steel grey colt was led out whose ears instantly swiveled forward upon seeing his friend. "They've always taken to one another - even as foals. We've always stalled them next across from each other so they can always see each other. I wouldn't recommend separating them, you won't get Prime there to do anything without him." Erik commented as he took the lead for Prime and moved him slightly to the side.
Truth Teller

The stunning iron-grey colt stood alongside his bay friend, nibbling on his withers seemingly in greeting. "He's a half to Deathflash's Truth through his dam isn't he?" John asked as he observed the colt curiously. Kim was ready with the information for the colt. "We bought him last year as a weanling actually, but he is out of Loose Truth so yes. Although the pairing for this colt is a bit unorthodox I think. His sire brings fresh lines into the mix but he ran at the sprinter distance during his career - specifically undercards actually." The colt's sire honestly left one wanting more alas he did have some perks.
Kim seemed to be looking over a clipboard of notes she had scribbled down earlier before the yearlings arrival. "Now All For Glory did sire, Ode To Glory who ran at router distance and ended up winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, he also finished third in the Preakness Champion Stakes and Belmont Turf Classic." John seemed to nod slightly in approval finding promise in the colt on the turf further on down the line. "And Deathflash's Truth, his maternal sibling is of course heading for the Triple Turf Sprinter Crown series this year." John still seemed as though he was lost in thought so Kim continued on about the colt's dam. "His dam had Beautiful Liar who finished third in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf." John patted the colt on the shoulder, "Make sure to stall them across from each other." John reminded the hands as they led the two colts side by side into the barn. "It's too early to say where this colt can go, he could take after his sire and run the sprinter distance or his dam and go above and beyond that. Now whose this next fella?" John inquired as a sleek, black colt was led off from the trailer.
PARTY O'WAR
black colt by FOUNDATION out of FOUNDATION
* full brother to PARTYATTHEDISCO and MARDI GRAS
Kim was beyond herself with excitement as the colt bobbed his head and snorted. He was built for such an early age, lanky but it was clear that he'd mature into a big horse not only in height but also in size. Yet the colt was calm and manageable - an attribute that was rare in usually rambunctious yearlings. "I got lucky when I came across him. He's a full brother to Partyatthedisco and Mardi Gras. Unfortunately, he'll be the last full sibling to them as his dam died during foaling, he was raised by a nurse mare." The early trauma as a foal didn't even seem to dampen the colt's spirits as he was looking around and trying to see what all the commotion was. "Their only brother, wow. You know Partyatthedisco isn't doing too bad over at Firestone right now either. Damn these are going to be some big horses." The colt was already just over sixteen hands it was a plus that he was so easy to manage. As soon as the black colt disappeared into the barn, finally a filly was led off the trailer.
Foolish Lass
bay filly by FOOLISH LAD out of OUI OUI MARCI
The girl was dainty and had a unique broken blaze that set her apart from just any old bay. As soon as she stepped off the trailer, she squealed and kicked up her heels almost ripping the lead away from her handler in the process. "Woo boy, she looks delightful." Mik commented under his breath as the filly danced sideways before finally being stopped in front of the trainers. She still insisted on tossing her head, pawing the ground and just trying to make herself known. As soon as John reached out to pet her the filly shrilled like she'd been shot and reared up. "Who is she by again?" John asked unable to think of any absurdly loud horses off the bat.
"She's by Foolish Lad, he won the Breeders' Cup Turf and just narrowly missed the Turf Triple Crown. Actually his daughter, Scintilla is absolutely killer on the turf. She's won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, a race named after her sire - Foolish Lad's Marathon Challenge, and even won the Cotillion Stakes as a three year old. She's an all around HOTY horse." Kim finally took breath with John chuckling. "I can see Scintilla is one of your favorites. This filly is out of one of our unraced mares, right?" Kim nodded before adding a bit about Foolish Lad, "It looks like the get of Foolish Lad are always worked towards the Breeders' Cup Turf at some point in their career but it always seems to work well for them." John nodded and made some mental notes as the bay filly was led off into the barn but not before bucking a couple of times just for the hell of it.
Speedy Tomcat

A big, bulky dark colt was led off the trailer next and it was Elijah that spoke up first. "With this guy you're going to want to make sure you put a lock on his stall door - he's guaranteed to get out. He also likes to jump out of the paddock, but mostly just to get into the hay bales and the feed room if he can." Elijah took hold of the colt and smiled at him. The colt had already gotten a bit of the lead in his mouth and was bobbing his head playfully. "He's a big, crazy monkey but you guys will love him, I promise. His dam has a three year old racing right now, Super Cat, and he started racing a bit late because he was a bit slow to mature. He broke his maiden first time out and I believe he won the Seashell Cup G5 Sprint this year too."
Elijah seemed to pause before having an -aha- moment and reached into his pocket and offered the colt a peppermint who gladly dropped the bit of lead and hungrily snatched up the mint. "He is actually the first son and foal of Speed Rush and will be the first to hit the tracks. I'm sure Grayson Meadows has a lot riding on this colt as a result. Luckily this boy didn't get his sire's temperament, I can honestly say that Tomcat is my favorite out of this yearling crop. I already look forward to having him back at KC Stud when he retires later on down the line." There was something akin to admiration and adoration in Elijah's eyes as he watched the colt be led away into the barm.
