Forbidden to Fly daughter, Icarus Flight, prepares for Orchid Cup
FTH Juvenile Dirt Mile* and Magic Millions Fillies Dirt Sprint* winner, Icarus Flight is fully rested and raring to go after having a month off in June after winning 6 of her 10 starts this year. The 2 year old is one of the smallest out on the tracks, standing at just 15.2 hands but the little girl can run. Although capable - via her lineage - of possibly running at ten furlongs, the filly loves running at 5-9 furlongs and John Murchison won't push the filly pass that since she excels at that distance. She's a wonderful mover and a motivated sprinter and miler horse. She's earned $862,000 in just five months since she made her debut back in January of this year. "She's just fantastic to be around, a big baby even." commented the filly's jockey, Samson Cooper. The filly has been at her top form during her morning workouts and will be back on the track later this week at Battlestone Downs for the Shine Young Futurity before heading to the Orchid Cup*. Trainer John Murchison found it easy to plan out the filly's schedule for the year with her end-goal ultimately being BC Juvenile Fillies. John hopes to prepare the filly for the competition by running her in the A-Lot-To-Live-Up-To Stakes in September as well as the Ballet Ball Futurity in October.
Rising Wonder is enjoying his time off at KC Stud for the month of July
The brilliantly talented 2 year old son of The Rising is enjoying his time off in the paddocks at KC Stud in Kentucky. He joins his half-sister, Rise Me Gold (Acorn Stakes* and Coaching Club American Oaks* winnr) for a much needed break for the month of July. "I think he believes he's on vacation. He's just been tearing up his paddock, bucking and kicking, ever since he arrived." reported stallion manager and owner, Elijah Oak. The rest is much deserved for the colt as he fought hard for his win in the Magic Millions Colts Turf*, The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Turf* earlier this year. The colt is three wins away from achieving G3-status and the team at KC Racing hopes he will achieve that by the end of the year - with even higher hopes of him achieving G1 next year. He will arrive back at KC Racing during the first week of August and begin racing again August Week 3 in the Hagyard Fayette Stakes*. John Murchison is directing him towards the Youth Turf Challenge series before running him in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at the end of the year. For now, the colt will enjoy his time by just being a horse and causes all sorts of trouble.
Oh The Irony Seemingly Pulled Up at the Borrego Handicap
Oh The Irony, winner of the Magic Millions Fillies Turf*, raced in an undercard race over the weekend and ended up placing fifth. Murchison had been noticing that the filly just wasn't performing as well as he had hoped for her debut this year having only placed in four of her seven races, all but one of them being undercards. The horse is the first turf filly for KC Racing and she was purchased with high hopes. It wasn't until she placed fifth that Murchison noticed that her jockey had tried to discreetly pull her up halfway through the race - something the official hadn't noticed. The filly was favoring her left foreleg and was starting to limp which resulted in her jockey immediately dismounting after the race and checking for swelling. It wasn't long before the filly was seen by a vet and taken off the track and immediately taken to an equine hospital. As it would turn out the filly suffered from a condylar fracture that had been steadily becoming worse over the last couple of weeks. After x-rays were taken a procedure was done to remove a few micro fragments, yet the vet deemed that the damage had not yet become so severe that it would need screws to fix. Unfortunately, the filly will be put on stall rest but may just resume racing sometime next year. "I value the health of our horses before worrying about whether they can return to racing or have any potential as a stud or broodmare. Although she isn't a fan favorite or anything like that, Irony still deserves just as much TLC as any other horse." commented trainer John Murchison.
The filly is to remain at a hospital in Kentucky until further notice.
