Still deserving of a pat, Bona Fide makes her way home after a dissapointing 5th place finnish in the Woodbine Oaks.Of 8 starts this year, Bona Fide had won 5 and placed in 3. Her success this far has been delightfully thrilling to watch as the proven difficult to beat daughter of True Enough excelled this year under new ownership. However as the buzz of the Woodbine Oaks fizzled away, with winners basking in the spotlight, our reporters found themselves drawn to the clearly dissapointed staff of Highgrove Thoroughbreds, as they walked their sweat-lathered filly to the wash bays. "Nobody was expecting this," trainer, Leo Turner commented with an obvious pain in his eyes, "She was well prepared for this. She should have done better." Uninterested in talking further, we asked owner Connie Fae, what she thought braught about the poorly finnish. "We were so confident in her, everybody was. Not only has she beaten these horses before, but she was fighting fit and ready to win this morning. We don't know what happened, but she's tough in spirit so I'm sure she'll bounce back." The question on everybodies mind was always going to be if she would run in the remaining legs, and we asked the tender question whilst Connie Fae gave the striking bay filly a reasuring rub over the eyes. "She comes first. We'll be having her screened by a vet before making any decisions, and consult with trusted friends in the racing community before we confirm her entry in the Bison Stakes. Something didn't seem right today. I know horses have 'off' days, but..." Ms Fae trailed, obviously emotional. But if we can say one thing it was certainly that Bona Fide, affectionately known as 'Bonnie' by those that knew her, had lost no spirit. Even in her tired state she ensured she put her groom to work, fidgeting and threatening mischevious nips as they scraped the remaining water from her coat. Only time will tell if we see her in the remaining legs of the Canadian Triple Tiara.
