Juvenile Workout for Enough Said
New Ownership workout for Over Time
New Ownership workout for Over Time
The sun was just starting to rise, shining it's relentless rays onto the coats of the Thoroughbreds that were walking on the track. Myra flicked the little drop of sweat off the bay colt's wet neck from the heat and continued to slowly walk the horse. Everybody was affected by the sudden heat wave that had rolled around, with the temperature already at 86 degrees and rising. The colt, who would have normally enjoyed the gesture, just simply shook her hand off and snorted; conveying his discomfort in the heat. Over Time, who had been an angel and was now a terror, refused to move another step. Myra could see Annabel struggling with the filly, the newer jockey used to riding the calmer, more obedient mounts. "Make her move, show her the whip if you need to." The older jockey advised Annabel, who very lightly tapped Ova with the whip. The gray filly immediately launched into a fast gallop as if she was just asked to give her all for the final stretch, leaving Annabel to regain her wits.
"Seriously? I literally just tapped you like a fly would, you drama queen," Annabel muttered to Over Time as soon as she had reined in the filly, irritation in her voice but a smile on her face.
"Well, you got her to move, right?" Myra said with a laugh. Annabel tried to not laugh too, but utterly failed as she patted Ova's neck.
"We should probably take her to the gates for Sayer," Annabel said, finally wiping the smile off her face.
"Yeah, that's a good idea. Maybe you can get Ova to run like that again. You should have seen your face when she took off. You were like-" Myra still grinned but stopped her sentence midway seeing an unamused Annabel.
"Haha, really funny, Myra. Who's the older one here?" Myra shrugged, ignoring the other jockey's question, wiping a bead of sweat off her brow as Enough Said stood calmly in the gate. The older jockey watched as Over Time attempted to load for the third try. When the filly was finally loaded, Myra decided to mess with Annabel.
"You know, Anna, I think if you just tap Ova very lightly with the whip..." the gates opened and Over Time started without hesitation, Sayer right on her heels. The bay colt pressed the pace, urging the filly on. As they reached the final stretch Ova became tired out, letting Sayer take the lead. Until, that's when Annabel decided to take Myra's advice from the gate. The jockey softly tapped the horse with the whip, instantly feeling her lengthen her stride. Over Time seemed to be rejuvenated, pushing ahead and finally crossing the wire first a couple lengths in front of Enough Said.
After the jockeys finished cooling down the horses, they started walking up to the stable.
"What happened back there? I was pretty sure I had that." Myra said, smiling at the filly, admiring her strong finish.
"Well, let's just say I took your advice," Annabel replied with a smirk.
