** Acorn Stakes Winner, Rise Me Gold reveals her diva-side
I
t has certainly been the beginnings of a great year for KC Racing. Firstly, we should address the major elephant in the room. Rise Me Gold, our The Rising filly, bested her more experience competition late last month in the ACORN STAKES*, otherwise known as the first leg of the Triple Tiara. The news shook KC Racing to it's core, they hadn't been expecting such a major win from the filly. Head trainer, John Murchison, claims that he knew she could win it (but we all know that he was biting his nails as much as we were). This will be the first foal, let alone filly, by The Rising to win such a major feat. Through her sire, such prowess on the track hasn't been seen since her sire's sire, Hall of Famer The Natural. We were on the edge of our seats last week when Rise Me Gold tackled the MOTHER GOOSE STAKES*, but unfortunately the filly was bested by the horse who narrowly placed second in the previous Acorn Stakes. We have faith in our diva that she'll regain her moxie going into the COACHING CLUB AMERICAN OAKS*, the last of the Triple Tiara. Rise Me Gold is now a million-dollar winning G4 3 year old and honestly? We couldn't be any happier. After the tiara races are over, this filly is going to take a full month off in July at our Kentucky barn, KC Stud until returning to the track in August. There are plans for her to tackle the BREEDERS' CUP later this year, and ultimately we are actually debating retiring the filly at the end of the year. She will probably tackle the dirt distance series at Battlestone Downs as she is quite knowledgeable on how to handle the colts on the track.Speaking of The Rising, we also had Rising Wonder surprise us completely by overtaking The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Turf* back in March. We weren't expecting this colt to advance like he did, but he's a G4 level horse now and we just barely scratching the surface of the halfway mark of the year. That's not even mentioning just how HOTY savvy this colt is, hearkening back to his amazing damsire, Merry Bay King. Following his half-sister's break from racing in July, this colt will also be getting a break and returning to the tracks in July before he starts prepping for the BREEDERS' CUP, later this year.
Another juvenile that's taken the tracks by storm is Icarus Flight. She's almost a sprinter dirt equivalent to Rising Wonder in terms of ambition and success. As a juvenile she's just shy of a million in earnings. She conquered the FTH JUVENILE DIRT MILE*, MAGIC MILLIONS FILLIES DIRT SPRINT* . This is a perfect example of a dirt sprinter (not even trying to brag, I'm proud of my girl!) and an even more perfect example of what an Hall of Famer sire like Forbidden To Fly can produce. Icarus Flight is receiving a couple more months off than most of our horses as she is taking June off and returning to the track in July before going a couple months before taking another month off in October to prepare for the last crunch of the more difficult HOTY races later in the year. This filly will definitely be a contender for the Triple Sprinter Tiara next year.
Our colt acquired from Battlebrook, Roussong, was our trusted Triple Crown candidate for this season and he ended up placing last, something that's actually happened four other times this year. Trainer John Murchison was disappointed in the colt and tried him in the prep races for the Triple Sprinter Crown, but the colt even raced lackluster then. John decided to pull the colt from the crowns altogether and is still debating on what direction he wants the colt to go. Right now he has a race scheduled for June, but his schedule after that is uncertain as of now.
We do have some more good news to outweigh the bad. KC Racing's first and founding horse, Muggathugga, reached Grade 1 status after flying to victory in his recent win in the SUMMER CUP*. This is the first time KC Racing has had a Grade 1 horse on their racing roster, and this is the first horse we've ran from Maiden to Grade 1. We couldn't be more proud of our favorite boy, 'Mugs'. His schedule has been altered in light of this victory and John Murchison encourages the colt to try the more difficult dirt distance races.
Originally, recently acquired filly, Apache Sunrise was slated to try for the CANADIAN TRIPLE TIARA*, but has since been pulled from the prep races and is now being directed to normal HOTY races.
Deathflash's Truth will be slated for a run in the BOY'S FESTIVAL while the aggressive Hellagood is slated for a run in BOY'S PARTY. Both of these three year old sprinters will be slated in their own respective runs for the Triple Sprinter Crown. Hellagood recently broke his maiden and will be nudged towards HOTY races for the remainder of the year along with Deathflash's Truth.
Many of you have noticed that Sylvanite hasn't been as much of an appearance on the track as much as she did last year. Sylvanite was KC Racing's 2016 contender for the Triple Tiara, and tackled the Breeders' Cup, the filly fell short in both races. She ended up winning a leg of the distance series in the MARYLAND DERBY* over at Battlestone Downs. 2017 has proved not to be quite that stellar of a year for the four year old mare. During her last race in the NASSAU STAKES* she surprised us with a last place victory. In light of making accommodations for our incoming yearlings for 2018, we've decided to retire Sylvanite from the track completely. This half-sister to Tiger Heart has wowed us numerous times since we've ran her in our racing string, but we're confident in our decision to end her racing career here and neither risk injury to her in the coming races nor damage her race record. Sylvanite retires as a Grade 2 with $1,515,000 in earnings over her career. She will be traveling to our breeding partner, KC Stud in Kentucky over the weekend. No plans have been made as of yet as to which sire she will be paired with.
To be honest with all the stable-owners out there, KC Racing is strongly considering retiring more of their racing string in the coming months to allow us to focus on our younger racing string and our incoming yearlings. Muggathugga is being considered for a December retirement, Escape Artist is being considered for retirement after he reaches G1 Status (he's just 1 race shy of it), A True Hero may continue into 2018, Enrapture is being considered for retirement after she reaches G1 Status, and Rise Me Gold may very well retire at the end of the year. It's with a heavy heart that we are even considering this, but we'd like to condense our racing string so that we are able to focus on our horses. We are aware that many stable owners are capable of juggling insanely large racing strings, but we simply cannot bring ourselves to do it. As of current, we are leasing out 6 of our racing string, Beyond Constellation, Like A Lioness, Sweet Talker, Louisiana Blues, Partyathedisco and Dark Maiden (who will retire at the end of the year).
