Takeover Bid & Devon Blackthorn
Everyone at Firestone was gearing up for the upcoming Crown and Tiara races, prepping horses and pampering them with love and treat. Carter was already on edge about his two new fillies that the last thing he had to worry about was a new colt being reclaimed from another barn. Takeover Bid was as fresh as fresh could be. The young gray colt stood wide-eyed in front of the turf track at Firestone Racing, gazing in awe at his new surroundings. It had only been a few days that Tik was here. Carter certainly wasn't planning on getting any more horses in Year Seventeen, but then Tik popped out of nowhere, alongside a fiery little weanling by the name of Screamscape and a more laid-back filly who had the personality of Jekyll and Hyde named Sizzling Addiction.
Tik chewed at the bit in his mouth, rolling the metal across his tongue as he waited for his new jockey to arrive. His tail swished eagerly as Devon got a boost into the saddle. Carter wasn't sure how much gallop training the colt had gotten before Firestone picked him up. All he knew that he was unraced and things could either go very well or very bad. With the dwindling number of maidens heading into Crown season, Carter hoped that the eager gray colt would have no troubles breaking his maiden. With a deep breath, Devon gently pressed his heels into Tik's sides and was startled when he jumped about ten feet into the air and then another ten feet forwards. Grabbing onto a handful of silver mane, Tik bounded forwards into a springy trot with his ears perked forwards, not waiting for Devon to regain full balance.
After trotting him around a bit on the good turf, Tik had finally started to relax with the new rider aboard. He was still chewing on the metal bit as he transitioned easily into a canter, Devon keeping a tight hold of the reins so that the eager two year old wouldn't bolt forwards. As they entered the backstretch, Devon could tell feel Tik's muscles supple and he felt less like a bomb ready to explode. Putting trust in the horse, Devon loosened the reins just slightly before getting Tik move forwards into a gallop. The young thoroughbred went as soon as he had the chance, his legs stretching out in front of him as he started to gain speed throughout the straightaway. From the side of the track, Tik looked like he was genuinely enjoying himself, taking this nice run with ease and he felt great under Devon's control.
With each furlong, the young colt started moving faster and faster, making Cater keep a close eye on how fast the pair were going on his stop watch. Devon gave Tik a slight tap on the shoulder with the whip, asking him for just slightly more speed as they galloped closer to the last bend. Breathing heavily, Tik surged ahead and passed his finish line with ease. It almost looked like he had a smile on his face as Devon tried to gently slow down the colt into a peaceful canter then to a quiet, relaxed trot. He couldn't help but smile as he patted the gray colt's sweaty neck. Carter was excited to see what the colt could do in a real race situation.
