Annabel lowered herself into the racing saddle, patting King's neck as she secured her reins. Myra was doing her best to control the spooking filly Chetory, making her trot in circles around the track. Both of these horses were from Valkyrie Stables, both having come to Crimson Haven with The Raven and Monarch's Journey through a sale. Wildcat King snorted as Annabel asked for a trot, staying a good distance from Chet as she was still misbehaving. "You've got quite the handful there, Myra," the jockey said, watching the bay filly move.
"You're not kidding. She's a stellar racehorse though, just have to get her back into good racing form. The same situation with him." Myra said, still focusing on getting Chet to stand still. Annabel nodded her head, leaving Myra alone to work with Chet. After their warm up, Tony had arrived with the usual coffee in his hand. "Chetory and Wildcat King. Beautiful horses," Tony said, reaching up a hand to stroke King's nose. "Let's load them, then breeze seven furlongs. Got it?" The two jockeys nodded their heads, then were loaded into the gate. They both stood patiently until the bell went off, where the horses exploded. Wildcat King started slower, which was normal, while Chetory took off without hesitation. The filly took the lead, her legs churning and kicking up turf while King stayed glued to her side. He kept right along with Chet, always reminding her of his presence. The race continued on until the final furlongs, the odds changing. Wildcat King was starting to pull away, only to be challenged again by Chetory. The bay filly was determined to not let this win get away from her and continued to press on, fighting to stay neck and neck with King.
The two horses passed under the wire, Chetory putting her head in to take the workout by a nose. The jockeys reined in their horses, both grinning ear to ear and pleased with their horses. Tony seemed to also have enjoyed the workout, his eyes dancing with joy while he sipped his coffee. "Wonderful," he said. "Absolutely wonderful. Good work, all four of you. They looked like panthers on that track, stalking each other for the win." Tony gave each horse a pat on the neck, despite Chetory's pinned ears and Myra's tight reins.
"It felt that way." Myra said, still smiling at her filly.
"Same," Annabel agreed. "I guess we'll see how our Wildcat does this week, won't we Tony?"
"We will. And he'll be ready."
