Kim Kenny had always expressed favoritism in two horses on the track, Sun King and Spotlight Pride. While the breeding division owned a half brother to Sun King who didn't get the opportunity to shine as much as his more popular brother, the stable had nothing on Spotlight Pride. No reserves, no close lines, nothing. And then Valkyrie Stables began to participate in a liquidation sale of sorts to try and take the load off their racing string.
Deathflash's Truth hadn't raced since late March, having been allowed some much needed rest and TLC due to a minor injury to his hoof that healed in the coming weeks. By the time he reached KC Racing in the third week of April after a month's rest, the colt couldn't have looked better.
Jockey Andy Hobbs sat proudly atop the steel grey colt who looked like he felt pretty damn good about not being cooped up in his stall for once. Assistant trainer Mikael urged the jockey to trot the colt towards the track. "The vet gave him a clean bill of health and he looks like he's gloating about it. He's got a nice fluid motion too when he moves. But seeing him really work is what I wanna see. See how he tears up the turf." Mikael instructed as the colt bobbed his head and pranced towards the track.
Another jockey rode Indian Night, another grey colt who was a couple shades lighter than Deathflash that loved the turf more than anything. "Indian Night's gonna think this is child's play, I've seen Spotlight Pride run, but none of his family." The horses were loaded up into the starting gate with Deathflash's Truth practically chewing on the bit ready and raring to go.
As soon as the gates opened Indian Night shot forward while Deathflash kept a few lengths behind apparently that was his happy place for the day. However, when his jockey asked for more speed the colt would give without hesitation and when there was roughly four furlongs left, Deathflash started grinding his gears and opening up his stride and looked as though he was dancing on the turf.
Indian Night wanted nothing of that and lengthened his stride but Deathflash had already danced ahead and kicked up turf as he went before surging passed the wire even giving a little buck afterwards as though he knew he had done something good.
