The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Turf WIN. Rising Wonder PLACE. Constitution SHOW. Belladonna Fourth. Ice Fiend Fifth. Pure Innocence I feel like I say this all the time, but this time I really mean it - this was hard. I mulled over it and moved horses around constantly. In the end it was Rising Wonder’s 2nd Place at the distance already that give me a winner. He’s been raced consistently and has had a taste for tougher competition, not to mention he’s the only horse in the field that has run at 9F and done well. He really gave me the impression he liked this distance. I think he was ready to take on some of the horses that beat him in the Spring Cup and used that to further fuel his fire. Naturally, Constitution has been doing amazingly well and is in prime form, I thought it only natural that he would continue to thrive. He narrowly lost the win to Rising Wonder’s previous experience at the distance, and I was subconsciously a bit more drawn to Rising Wonder’s more expressive leg type and personality. Belladonna was probably the biggest underdog in this race, with it being her first HOTY appearance. I tossed up between her and Ice Fiend for the third, and it came down to her previous experience at the distance and that her last run was a good win and she was boosted by this confidence. Ice Fiend had a really good shot here, but it was SUCH a tough field and his racing style seemed to suggest he prefers the longer distances, especially with 9F being new territory for him. Lastly but certainly not least, it killed me to see Pure Innocence in 5th. If I was to choose a winner on how much I liked a horse, she’d have taken the win easily. Her personality grabbed my attention, and she stood out the most to me. She’s only raced in HOTY starts, but perhaps was the least physically prepared, having had raced a little less consistently than the rest of the group. I reluctantly felt she was slightly outdone by all the testosterone in this field who were all in tip-top shape. I still feel she had every chance to do well here, maybe with a bit more confidence and track time.
