2017 is the second full year that KC Racing will get to experience, and hopefully we will get to experience many more in the future. It's been a slow and rather rough start to the year, but we are managing to hold on tight and just go with the flow of things. Summer will be here before we know it and the scariest part of the next couple of months is actually the Kentucky Derby and Acorn Stakes in May. KC Racing has never had a horse for the Kentucky Derby, heck not even for any of the other Crown races, excluding Sylvanite's attempt to tackle the Canadian Triple Tiara in 2016 and came home with a third place finish in the Wonder Where Stakes, aka the last and final leg of it.
For The Gallop, one of our very first horses has been able to reach G2 status recently. Many of the public know him and love him for not only his flashy appearance, but his pleasant demeanor. The horse in question? The now four year old colt, Muggathugga. Mugs is a horse of fresh, foundation lines and although he doesn't shine as brightly as one of the horses that belong to one of the more notable and more monstrous stables, he has managed to stay relatively consistent since starting his career two years ago. He won his first HOTY race last year, but it has been made incredibly clear that he's an undercard horse. HOTY races literally shatter this colt, and it's a shame that it has to be that way. The plans for him this year are to focus on the seasonal cups and he will continue to race into his fifth year. Trainer John Murchison hopes to see some kind of change in the colt by next year for he hopes that the colt can still make G1 status with a few HOTY wins.
There's a horse that was recently acquired by us that has proven to be as much of a danger on the track as she is to KCRS staff. That would be none other than the volatile dirt filly, Enrapture. This four year old filly had taken a couple of months off last year by request of Ripley Marsh after coming into KCRS hands. Kim Kenny of KCRS took the advice and the filly stayed out in the paddocks before returning to training late December to have her ready to hit the tracks again for the last part of January. This filly has done nothing but go above and beyond and her tenacity almost makes it worth getting kicked at or bitten. Seriously, this filly is downright hateful, she can never be pleased, but she does her job well and she does it right. She currently has a three-win streak going on for her 2017 starts and John Murchison couldn't be happier. Unfortunately, the trainer has yet to decide which direction he wants to point the filly in for the remainder of 2017. March is coming up fast and Enrapture is already starting to show signs of boredom after only a week's rest. She is a completely HOTY savvy filly and honestly, head trainer John doubts the filly would take well to undercards at this point. Under our silks she has gone from G3 to G2 in the span of only two months and she's merely two wins away from hitting G1 and really raising hell for her rivals. Back to the topic of the Triple Crown and the Tiaras, KC Racing has three contenders for different crowns/tiaras. Roussong (by Knight Rousseau) will be KC Racing's contender for the Kentucky Derby in May. He's a particularly classy horse, but it's hard to tell what he's going to do among other horses. If he runs well from March-April he may be able to make G3 status which could give him the extra push he needs. He was dead last in the Unicorn Horn Dirt and did just as poorly in the Battlestone Downs Dirt Classic, two races that should have been easy for him. He made a slight comeback and seemed to have his head on straight for the Genuine Risk Stakes with a second place finish. The colt has three more prep races to go before the Kentucky Derby comes around, at this point all we can do is pray for him to do well.
Rise Me Gold, Key West's former stablemate, will be KC Racing's Triple Tiara contender for 2017. This filly has been known to not only run with the boys, but kick dirt up in their faces and steal first place from them without a problem. John Murchison insisted on seeing the filly run for the tiara, but stableowner Kim Kenny is incredibly hesitant about the filly running in HOTY races of any sort. She's strong enough to take on the boys, as given by her previous race records, but somehow she manages to do poorly against fellow fillies.
Apache Sunrise is a recent edition to KC Racing. She came to our stables just in time, however, because John was looking for a contender for the Canadian Triple Tiara. Apache Sunrise reminded him of Sylvanite as a three year old and since running for us the filly hasn't been too bad out on the track, but has yet to acquire a win under John's leadership.
