There are many 'big' races of the year but no race has as much hype as the races of the Triple Crown and the Triple Tiara. These are the series that draw in both horse fanatics and people who don't know a horse from a donkey. It's what truly allows a horse to outshine his competition and make history, that is if he or she is able to win it all.
Last year we raced both Rise Me Wonder and Key West under our silks, but the latter was sold and traded for Roussong from Battlebrook Stables. Key West has ended up being a key competitor against the energetic Roussong. These two horses have come a ways from their juvenile season and the thought of them racing for the crown and tiara has got everyone at KC Racing biting their nails.
RISE ME GOLD: This 3 year old The Rising filly finds her strength from the Hall of Famer, The Natural who won the Breeders' Cup Turf and Breeders' Cup Mile. She had a rough start to her juvenile year before finally picking up the pace and winning the Summer Cup* and third in the Maryland Million Lassie*
Head trainer John Murchison had every intention of keeping the filly in the undercards, but the filly always seemed insistent on looking for more competition .
At the beginning of 2017, Rise Me Gold had a long year already planned out for her, but the head trainer knew that strong-hearted diva had it in her to handle the increased workload.
She had a nice awakening to the year with a third place finish in a stakes race and gradually moved up until she won a HOTY race in February. The filly seemed to have gotten into a groove at that point and placed second in yet another HOTY race, before winning a Triple Tiara prep race, the Davona Dale Stakes and coming second in the Silverbulletday Stakes, another TT Prep race.
Rise Me Gold is normally thought of as the queen bee around the stable, but when she puts her mind to it she can definitely set the tracks on fire. She wants the attention and the cameras on her and she knows that being at the lead of the pack and crossing the wire is the only way to do it. The filly's good fortune has even rubbed off on her younger half-brother, Rising Wonder, as he's already made it to G4 as a juvenile and the year's not even halfway over.
No matter the results of the filly's bid for the Triple Tiara, she will be taking a much needed month off in July and spend a bit of time in the paddocks over at KC Stud before jumping right back into the fray sometime in July.
Pray for our diva, she's going to need it next month.
ROUSSONG The ever eager Roussong was a must-have for us last year when Ripley Marsh offered the horse for us in exchange for Key West. Nowadays, Key West seems to have flourished after being gelded and under the ownership of Battlebrook. The idea of gelding Rou has never come to mind as we wouldn't want to risk lose any of that seemingly endless energy that the colt practically radiates with at home and on the track.
He's always looking to show everyone that he's very much alive with a spirited buck or rear when being lead in hand. The colt is lean, but not mean. Where some horses achieve their bounty by being aggressive, Roussong finds his bearings by being clever on the track. He prefers to let his competition get comfortable with their speed and placement before he makes his move like a chess piece on a board, and next thing you know he will be challenging the leader.
Roussong had a superb juvenile year with a win in the A-lot-to-live-up-to Stakes Juvenile Dirt and placing second in the Arizona Breeder's Futurity and third in the Orchid Cup Colts and Jack Prince Juvenile. Roussong has proved to be an HOTY-savvy colt from the first time he's raced under our colors and this year has proved to be no different. He has finished second in two Triple Crown prep races, Holy Bull Stakes* and Genuine Risk Stakes*.
His first time racing this year was the first week of January in the Bright Beginnings Stakes where he secured an easy victory over his competition. He's merely one win away from being G3 and the thought of that possibly coming from his next race, the Kentucky Derby has us reeling.
The colt is a son of Knight Rousseau who won the Dubai World Cup in his hay day. Roussong was the only foal of his dam, Mystical Melody who came second in the Kentucky Derby, third in the Preakness Stakes and second in the Belmont Stakes against colts which can only add to her son's moxie.
We hope that this son out of Mystical Melody can accomplish what she could not and go even further. No matter the outcome, Roussong, like his stablemate, Rise Me Gold, will be taking a well-deserved month off over in a secluded paddock over at KC Stud before coming back to KC Racing in July. The next major goal on Roussong's list is to tackle the Dirt Distance over at Battlestone Downs later this year.
